Workshop for Middle Eastern Music & Ney Playing

Workshop for Middle Eastern Music Ensemble & Makam Improvisation

1 (20).jpg

The aim of this course, designed for students and advanced learners, is to compose, arrange, and perform musical pieces at a professional level.

Within the seminar, we will explore the various facets of collaborative music-making.
From the initial idea to the final performance, we will jointly accompany each step of the creative process. The focus lies on the cooperative development and arrangement of musical concepts, as well as on the preparation of a professional musical presentation.

Key aspects include teamwork, attentive listening, constructive exchange, and harmonious communication.
The course is offered in the form of intensive block seminars, but can also take place as a regular weekly or monthly course, or as a standalone workshop consisting of two to three sessions.

Workshop: Turkish and Arabic Music with Recorder

1 (21).jpg

The recorder is a highly flexible instrument which, through specific fingering techniques, allows us to produce quarter tones and even smaller pitch intervals that are often used in Turkish and Middle Eastern music.

In this workshop, designed for recorder players, the foundations of the makam will first be introduced — a musical system on which the music of the Middle East is based (from Turkey to North Africa, from Iran to Central Asia).

Together we will explore the most commonly used modes (called makam in Turkish) in Turkish music and study a selection of traditional songs and instrumental pieces from different regions of Turkey. Particular attention will be given to the important topics of improvisation and ornamentation.

Throughout the seminar, we will work with alternative fingering and playing techniques that allow participants to produce quarter-tone intervals.
The aim is to become familiar with Middle Eastern melodies, to develop a sensitivity to unfamiliar intervals and ornaments, and to sharpen our ability to listen to one another.

The seminar concludes, if possible, with a short final concert.
