Welcome to my Winds-Advent-Calender 2025! Today’s piece is about ritual, body, origin, earth, magic, and fun, all together! The power of Schiarazula Marazula definitely possessed me, so in the end I really lost control and just went with the flow 🙂 No wonder: Schiarazula Marazula is indeed one of the most fascinating and mysterious Italian dances of the Renaissance. We know it today mainly thanks to the composer Giorgio Mainerio, who published it in 1578 in his collection Il primo libro de’ balli. Mainerio was active in Friuli, in north-eastern Italy, and this dance is very likely connected to that region and to its lively local traditions. It’s fast, energetic, and clearly meant for real dancing, not just for listening. The rhythm is simple, strong, and a bit hypnotic: the kind of music that makes your body move before your brain has time to think. And then there’s the title. Schiarazula Marazula doesn’t really mean anything. It sounds like a spell, a chant, an “abracadabra”. Something playful, ritual, and wild. It’s easy to imagine it being linked to old seasonal or nature-related celebrations. That’s probably why this dance still feels so powerful today... Enjoy the four sisters having fun with it! 🎄Welcome to my Winds-Advent-Calendar 2025!🎄 There is not just one way to play the recorder. In this video, I allow myself to move freely on the instrument, exploring ornamentation techniques that are not typically associated with the recorder. To do so, I chose a piece I deeply love. The istampita “Ghaetta” is preserved in the so-called London Codex (British Library, Add. MS 29987), fols. 56v–57r, one of the most important sources for 14th-century Italian instrumental music. Like other istampitte, it is a monophonic dance built on repeated sections, very likely meant to accompany real dancing. The piece is written in Italian 14th-century mensural notation. Dear friends, I hope you had a good start to the new year! I wish you all the best! I recently began to work with a new project, Phylomena, which I am delighted to share with you today. PHYLOMENA, female ensemble for Medieval music, presents a programm of monophonic songs of the 12th and 13th centuries that offers a cross-section of medieval love poetry as it could have been heard in diverse cultural establishments from across continental Europe, oscillating between aristocratic and clerical, courtly and urban. It features poems in diverse languages of varying poetic and musical forms. Medieval vocal pieces are paired with newly reconstructed instrumental music which draws on the melodic material contained in sung pieces, thereby providing the listener with a commentary and an opportunity for extended reflection as well as offering a bed of aural contextualisation for the modal structures not so commonly heard in our time. Dear friends, our journey through Ramadan 2025 is coming to an end! As a very special Eid Mubarak today, I wanted to share with you the words of an Italian mystic from the Middle Ages, to whom I am very devoted: Francesco d'Assisi (Francis of Assisi) The Canticle of Creatures (Cantico delle Creature, Canticum or Laudes Creaturarum), also known as the Canticle of Brother Sun, was composed by Francesco around 1224/25, shortly before his death. The Canticle is a praise of God and his creatures, becoming in this way also a hymn to life; it is a prayer filled with a positive view of nature, for the image of the Creator is reflected in creation: from this comes the idea of brotherhood between man and the whole of creation. Fraternity between humans and nature: a beautiful thought to end this Month and look to the future with hope. Many have observed similarities in the life and thought of Francis and Mevlana Rumi. I think Francis would have loved the ney if he had had the chance to hear it! The English translation is not entirely satisfactory, mainly because it is not easy to render the sweetness of the Italian language of the 1200s. Hier the original text, English translation is below: Altissimu, omnipotente bon Signore, Tue so le laude, la gloria e l'honore et onne benedictione. Ad Te solo, Altissimo, se konfano, et nullu homo ène dignu te mentouare.
